Sunday Sneak Peek
“The Prodigal Son”
Rev. Dawna Mantei
In metaphysics, we understand that the stories in the Bible are not necessarily true, but they reflect different parts of ourselves, and we can and should learn from them. On Sunday, October 7th, I am starting a 3 part series on the Bible story, The Prodigal Son. Most people think the story is about a rebellious youth who goes off and squanders all of his money and is later forgiven by his father and comes home. If you read the first line of the story, it starts with “There was a man who had two sons.” So, it’s actually a story about a father and how he dealt with his difficult children.
In this series, we will be delving deeply into the prodigal son, the elder brother and the father. On Sunday, I will begin with the younger son; the one the Bible refers to as “The Prodigal.” You might identify with this kid if you’ve ever rebelled against the family, indulged in wine, women (or men) and song, or maybe sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll. The word “prodigal” also means recklessly extravagant, wasteful. Of course, if you can’t relate to any of this, and you were always a perfect child and adult, then perhaps you will want to stay home on Sunday. On the other hand, if you are a normal human being like me, you may want to come early and sit in the front row.
Plan to attend Unity Center on Sunday when I will explore “The Prodigal Son” in all of us.
Message from Rev. Dawna
November is the month we traditionally make an extra effort to count our blessings. As I reflect over my past 25 years at Unity Center, I am amazed at all the blessings I have received serving as a Licensed Unity Teacher for 5 years, and then as your minister for 20 years. It has truly been a privileged and joy filled journey; one that will remain in my heart forever.
I will always cherish the memories we have shared together – Sunday mornings, candle lightings, burning bowls, white stone ceremonies, christenings, weddings, celebrations of life, classes, galas, music, fund raisers, remodels, landscaping, parking lots, roofs, joys and concerns, and so much more. Together we have accomplished so much, realized so many dreams, lived through a few trials, and persevered.
Therefore, it is with great sadness that I tell you I will be stepping down as your Minister as of January 7, 2019. That being said, I will not be leaving Unity Center. I will be assuming the role of Minister Emeritus and will continue to have an active role in the ministry. This has been a long and prayerful decision, and not one I have made lightly. There are some things Richard and I want to do and experience while enjoying the good health we have been blessed with. The time and energy needed to be a full-time minister does not leave any extra time to explore these options.
On December 9th I will be installing four new Spiritual Leaders who will join Sharon Callanan in that role. Andy Hill, Julie Davis-Bingham, Amanda LaCroix and Sybil Furman are not new names to any of you. They have demonstrated their service to Unity Center through giving of their time, talent & treasure in many ways, as well as taking monthly classes for over two years to anchor their consciousness in Unity Principles. While they will not be filling the role of “Minister,” the individual gifts they bring will very much help to keep the Center alive and well as the search for a new minister begins.
The Board and I have been preparing for this change for six months. There is a definite process in place to secure your new Minister and you will have a part in it. No final decisions will be made without your input and vote. A meeting will be held after the service on November 4th to share this process with you. Dr. Laura Briggs, Chair of the Search Committee, and I will be available to hear your concerns and answer any questions you may have. This is your Spiritual Center and you will not be left out of the loop.
There are really no words that can adequately express how hard this decision has been. I HAVE LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF BEING YOUR MINISTER. I LOVE ALL OF YOU! While it will be very painful to watch Unity Center go on without being your Minister, it is excruciating to think that it wouldn’t. So, please plan to attend the meeting on November 4th. I am sure you will have many questions and they deserve to be answered. I would request that you not address any of your questions or concerns to Laura, Board members or me prior to the meeting. In the interest of total transparency, fairness and clarity, we will answer any and all questions at that time.
It is with the deepest appreciation and love that I say, “Thank you for sharing my soul calling with me, and for being a part of the most rewarding 25 years of my life! We will always be One in Spirit!"
In Love & Unity,
I am grateful that your spiritual search has brought you in touch with Unity Center.
I believe we have been brought together by a Divine Appointment with Spirit.
If you are looking for a spiritual community that:
- Honors all religions, spiritual traditions, and individual spiritual journeys
- Has no strict creed or dogma.
- Provides a safe, nurturing environment in which you are empowered to express your self-discovery and spiritual potential.
- Believes all people are expressions of God’s love, and welcomes all people—no matter their age, gender, creed, race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, physical ability, sexual orientation, or any other way in which the human race divides its members.
- Promotes spiritual transformation in our personal lives, our community and our world.
…then I believe you will say the same thing so many of our members have said when they have entered our doors: "The first time I came to Unity Center, I felt like I had come home."
At Unity Center, we are dedicated to teaching and expressing a positive and practical approach to life. All of our classes and activities are designed to help people awaken to their spiritual nature and to express their divine potential in practical ways through the universal Truths that have been taught and demonstrated by all of the great Masters of Life!
Our beliefs are in harmony with the basic tenets of the world's religions and spiritual traditions that teach love. We encourage each person to pray regularly, think clearly, feel openly, to experience the love of their Source, individually, and to express that love universally.
We believe there is one God, called by many different names and found through many different paths. Wherever you are on your spiritual path, we welcome you, and I invite you to join us Sunday mornings at 10:30.
Peace in our time…
